When we were in our early twenties, my husband Lenny and I belonged to a Catholic Young Adult Singles Group. I was president of the Findlay, Ohio Chapter and he was president of the Tiffin, Ohio Chapter. We knew each other simply as friends. The Findlay Chapter was hosting a large Spring Formal Dance and I asked him if he was going to get a date and come. He said that he was not planning on attending because he had to study for finals.

Much to my horror, one week before the big Spring Formal Dance, my steady boyfriend broke up with me. There is no way I could host that dance without a date. Most people didn't even know about the breakup so there wasn't much hope of getting a date at such short notice. This was before the day of women asking men for a date.

Brainstorm! Ask Lenny! The phone call went something like this: " Hey Lenny, I haven't got a date for the Spring Formal. Would you be a good friend and help me out? I understood that he had to study. We could find a quiet place for him. All he had to do was escort me in and make an appearance." Thank goodness he agreed !

He escorted me into the dance and I found a quiet place in the kitchen for him to study. Being the dance chairman kept me busy all night. Toward the end of the evening, I decided to look him up and at least dance one dance with him.

To my great surprise there he was in the kitchen mixing punch and arranging cookies on trays. The person who was supposed to do it never showed up and he rose to the occasion. He had worked in the kitchen all night and didn't get a chance to study. Wow, what a great guy! Maybe I should reconsider this friendship thing. The next day I told my best friend Jackie who was dating his best friend Howie what a great guy he was. She told Howie and well, the rest is history. Thirty six years later we are happily married . Thank goodness my kitchen person never showed up!
